Trying to find the right cup.
I bought the diva cup size 2 about a year ago, and have never really been completely satisfied, but it did technically work. I trimmed the stem completely off, and it still often feels a little too long, but usable. In September I had a miscarriage, and since then I can’t get my Diva cup to work at all. I cannot get it to open no matter how I try. I gather from my reading that a firmer rim might help this, but I also want a shorter cup. I’m 35, have had one vaginal delivery, and have a moderate flow. Could anyone recommend some other cups to try? I’ve been going through the comparison list, but if anyone could help narrow it down that would be great.
Hello,
First, I want to say that I’m sorry to hear about your miscarriage and that I hope your heart heals from the loss. <3
Second, thank you for doing a bit of research and including some important information about your situation.
Reading that you need a firmer but shorter cup has led me to the suggestions below. I've given the measurements and some notes on them.
Diva Cup large for reference:
Total Length – 67mm
Without Stem – 56mm
Diameter – 45mm
Capacity to the Rim – 30ml
LaliCup medium
Total Length – 73mm
Without Stem – 53mm
Diameter – 43mm
Capacity to the Rim – 36ml
Although this cup isn't really firm, it has channels on the body that help it fold up small as well as want to push out when the fold is released. It's slightly shorter than the Diva Cup but has a rounded base that might be more comfortable. This cup holds the most out of this group and may allow you more wear time.
Lena large (original not sensitive)
Total Length – 71mm
Without Stem – 52mm
Diameter – 44mm
Capacity to the Rim – 30ml
This is a bell-shaped cup that has a firm body. The rim is slightly softer than the rest of the cup and is flared. Although some people have a little trouble getting this cup to open because of the softer rim, a majority of people find it to be very firm. Bell-shaped cups especially ones that have a flared rim tend to ride up and sit higher around the cervix. Because they tend to ride up and because the Lena has a rounded base, this cup may feel more comfortable. However, if the cup rides high and your cervix sits deep inside of the cup, some of the capacity will be displaced which may lead to more frequent emptying sessions.
Saalt Cup large (original not soft version)
Total Length – 70mm
Without Stem – 52mm
Diameter – 47mm
Capacity to the Rim – 35ml
This cup is a bit on the short side with a rounded body. Because the body is rounded, it gives back some of the capacity lost with the shorter design.
The rim is slightly softer but is more similar to the rim of the Diva Cup instead of flaring out like the Lena. This cup shouldn't ride up as high.
Sckoon large
Total Length – 70mm
Without Stem – 50mm
Diameter – 45mm
Capacity to the Rim – 30ml
This is another bell-shaped cup with a flared rim. It holds the same capacity as the Lena but the Sckoon has a thicker rim which may help it to open easier. The rest of the body is soft as in "gummy" feel – squishy like a gummy bear candy.
If I had to narrow it down to two, I would suggest the LaliCup or the Saalt. The LaliCup would be the softer of the two, but I wouldn't say that it would be harder to open. I have used both of them with equal ease.
Check out these cups and see if any interest you. If you have any questions or concerns about them or any other cup, I'll do my best to answer them.
Until then, good luck 🙂
