Started using larger menstrual cup and am spotting between periods
About four months ago, I got a new menstrual cup a size up from my old one, because the old one was leaking occasionally at night and during work days.
After using it once or twice, I experienced some spotting in between my periods, for only a day or two, nothing major. This happened again a few weeks after my next period. I switched back to the smaller cup, but it’s been three weeks since my last period and I had a bit more spotting over the past two days.
Is this something anyone else has experienced? I suppose it could be caused by something else, but it seems like a coincidence to be happening directly after changing cup sizes (Ruby Cup brand, small up to medium).
Thanks!
Hello There!
I’m not exactly sure what is going on there. If you continue to have spotting when you normally wouldn’t, I would suggest seeking medical advice. There might be something else going on.
From personal experience, I seem to have a bit more residual blood in my vaginal canal than I did when I was a tampon user. For me, it’s a darker brown indicating that it’s “old blood”.
My only conclusion is that the tampon absorbed everything (including my body’s other natural secretions) while the cup does not.
My doctor (and boss back then) told me to use a finger to swipe the vaginal canal if I felt I needed to clean it instead of using a douche.
Although the vagina can and will clean itself, sometimes I have a lot of old blood around the vaginal fornix (space around the cervix) and would rather clear that out than be surprised when it finds its own way out unexpectedly.
I don’t know why it’s happening when you change sizes, but it might be because the rim of the larger size likely sits differently in the vaginal fornix.
I’m sorry I couldn’t be much help but I hope can figure out a way to stop it.
Good Luck <3
