Need a new cup
I’m new to cups, have only used a Fluercup for 3 periods. I’m having a lot of difficulty with it. I have to spend 20 minutes and several attempts to get it to open. it isn’t comfortable as I can feel it the whole time. I can’t pee with it in, as in nothing will come out. And even farting makes me feel like it lost it’s suction and I have to reinsert. And it’s filling up too fast. I have about 24 hours of really heavy flow and in 20 hours I had to empty the cup, which was full, 5 times. I have 3 young children and coach/participate in several sports, I want a cup that lasts longer. I think I have average cervix height, when inserted I make it to my second knuckle. However, my obgyn told me I have a long cervix. She said mine was a little over an inch and that the average cervix is 0.6 inches. Also, the fluercup is painful for me to remove, just feels like it’s too big around. Although, the length of the fluercup seems to be ok.
Can you recommend another cup? I was looking at the femmecycle, but worry the bulbous shape.
I am 35 and have had 3 vaginal deliveries.
Hi Marie!
I’m sorry to hear that you’re having some issues with the FleurCup. It’s a great cup, but not great for everyone 🙁
With a medium to high cervix, you can use just about any cup shape or size, but you might find a “V” shaped cup or a bell-shaped cup with a regular style rim to be more comfortable for you.
Bell-shaped cups with flared rims like the FleurCup, tend to ride up and sit higher in the vaginal fornix. This can make it harder for someone with a higher cervix to reach the cup, as well as allow the cervix to sit deeper into the cup which may compromise the capacity.
It’s also very common for a flared rim to be softer than the body of the cup which can make it a little hard for people to open.
If you’re unable to urinate, feel like you don’t empty your bladder completely when you do, have a slow urine flow, have troubles when you defecate, or pass gas while using a menstrual cup, it’s a good sign that the cup is applying too much pressure in a sensitive area. Changing the firmness or shape of a cup might be the answer. A softer cup may feel more comfortable as it won’t apply as much pressure. Changing the shape of a cup may apply that pressure to an area that’s not as sensitive.

If you’re overflowing your cup more often than you’d like, you might consider a higher capacity cup. Below are some cups that might interest you.
Again, I feel that your cervix may be sitting too far into the cup and compromising the capacity. I choose some cups that will (hopefully) not only ease the pressure, be easier to open, but also allow more time in between emptying sessions.
(In order from Softest to Firmest)
FleurCup Large (for comparison)
- Total Length: 70mm
- w/o stem: 52mm
- Diameter: 45mm
- Capacity to Rim: 35ml
Casco Cup Large – A long body cup much like the Diva Cup but slightly softer.
- Total Length: 70mm
- w/o stem: 56mm
- Diameter: 44mm
- Capacity to Rim: 40ml
LuvUrBody Large – A long body cup with a rounded base. One of the highest capacity cups on the market. The new “Clear” version seems to be a different type of silicone and feels more “springy”. I personally prefer this one over the original colored LUB cups as I find it easier to open.
- Total Length: 77mm
- w/o stem: 58mm
- Diameter: 48mm
- Capacity to Rim: 43ml
LaliCup Large – While this cup isn’t as long as the two others that I mentioned, it is still a bit longer than the Fleur. It is also more bell-shaped but has a regular style rim that hopefully will keep this cup from riding up too high. It has a unique channel pattern around the body that helps this cup fold up smaller but also helps it to pop open when released. This is one of the cups that I reach for time and time.
- Total Length: 73mm
- w/o stem: 55mm
- Diameter: 46mm
- Capacity to Rim: 40ml
I hope you find something that not only works for you but is also comfortable while you engage in your sporting activities. I would normally suggest a cup that’s on the firmer side for sports, but hearing as you have been experiencing sensitivity and that the Fleur may be too firm for you, I hope that the cups I’ve suggested will clear that up.
Good Luck and let me know if you had any other questions.
Have a great weekend!
