My 11 yr old niece is late
She started her first period at the beginning of the year. I’ve been keeping track and last month she started on the 7th, but she’s still not had it this month. She said she’s had pain like she’s getting ready to but that’s it. She’s only been menstruating for 3 months. There’s been no weight or diet change. Is this normal? I’ll be taking her in, but the doctors around here are slow to work patients in.
Hello There!
I see your concern, but it is very common for someone who has just started their period to only experience spotting, light bleeding, or skipped months. It can also be the opposite and bleed several times a month. As the body is going through this process, there is an increased production of hormones that can cause cramping and bloating. This irregularity normally lasts for the first two years while the changing hormones are still unbalanced. If after a couple of years their period doesn’t become more regular, I would seek medical attention.
When I first started seeing blood, I was in 5th or 6th grade. It was more in the form of dark brown discharge (I thought I pooped my pants). It wasn’t until I was in 7th grade that I saw bright red blood, but even at that, I didn’t see it on a monthly basis.
It would be good to schedule a wellness exam since their body is going through a change, but I don’t think you need to rush to get in.
Hope this helps <3
