Itching / infection after using menstrual cup
I’ve been using menstrual cups for 4 months now, and every time I seem to get some kind of irritation / infection after the last day of my period. It feels like maybe thrush or BV or something, and generally lasts about a week. I’m not normally prone to this kind of thing, so at first I was kind of casual about my usage. Since the first month though, I feel like I’ve changed everything up – used two different cups, and went from normal soap to fragrance-free to a dedicated menstrual cup wash. I went from being a little lazy about my hands to washing them incredibly carefully every time I inserted or removed the cup. I don’t leave it in for more than 12 hours, ever. I don’t know what I could be doing wrong, but I’m on the point of giving up now. If anyone has any advice I’d be v grateful.
Hello There!
I’m sorry that you’re experiencing that. I might give up if that was a constant thing, too. While I don’t know what’s going on, I can lend some suggestions that might help.
Are these cups considered generic?
If they are generic, you might consider a reputable brand as generic brands don’t always have quality control. I’m not saying that that is what is happening but it could be a contributing factor.
Even though a generic brand can claim that they use medical-grade silicone and pigments, they might not be and can be causing irritation or imbalance in your good bacteria.
If these cups are reputable brands, it might be soap use altogether. I’ve spoken to a lot of people who are not able to use soap on their cups at all. They wash it well between emptying sessions and then boil it at the end of their period.
You might want to see if this will help with your situation as well.
If you notice any dryness during insertion, try using some water-based lubricant to help ease the cup in. The tissues are delicate and dryness can cause friction and chafing that may lead to micro-tears. Although these aren’t nearly as bad as if using tampons, they may be causing irritation that can cause an increase of infection.
There are several home remedies for thrush. I’ve heard good things about many of them but have never tried them myself.
If BV is minor and normally goes away on its own (in your situation) then a doctor isn’t really needed. Some will prescribe you medication, but it’s not necessary. A more severe cause will need medication to clear up.
*I’m not a doctor. You have a valid concern. If you are unsure, please seek medical attention.
Anyhow, I’m sorry that I couldn’t be of more help but I wish you a quick fix that allows you to continue using cups.
Good Luck and Have a good weekend! <3
