How to sterilize the cup
I am trying to figure out what is best for me to sterilise my cup. I was thinking about buying a silicon cup to fill with previously boiled water (because I don’t have a microwave) and then leave the cup inside for like 5 min. My question is: is leaving the cup in hot water for 5 minutes as effective as boiling it in water for like 3 minutes? Thank you.
Hello There!
If you’re trying to sterilize the cup, it will take high heat, irradiation, or chemicals, and applying them to high pressure. This would kill all forms of microbial life and prevents microbial growth.
But, you can sanitize the cup by submerging it in a pot of boiling water for several minutes. This cleans and disinfects the cup to make it sanitary. It removes some microbial growth. Normally, an object needs to stay in a rolling boil to achieve this.
You can set the cup in a pot of boiling water on a stovetop, but if you don’t feel comfortable leaving the cup out because of the people around you, pouring boiling water on it should be sufficient to clean it well enough. However, it probably won’t be “sanitized”.
Some people boil their cup when they first purchase it but don’t do it thereafter. They just use mild soap and water or just water before storing it.
You can also look into a steamer that can be plugged in anywhere. There are several steamers that have room for one or two cups.
Hope this helps,
