How do I know the cup I wear is too big?
Hey there! I purchased a Rubycup medium a year ago and it generally works great. I am 23 years old, haven’t been pregnant and since I have a heavy flow for the first couple of days, I chose the medium size and have to empty it about 3-4 times a day on day 2. However, I’m also very active and always leak those first few days. I’m starting to think that the medium size is too big and my pelvic muscles squish it. Is this possible? How do I know if a cup is too big? Thanks so much in advance
First of all, when someone is looking for a cup, I normally tell them to ignore the guidelines given by most cup companies. How old you are and if and how you’ve had children really doesn’t make a difference. You’re looking for a cup that’s comfortable and has the capacity that you’re looking for. While we wish that cups could hold us over for the full 12 hours as they claim, it really depends on your flow. A cup may very well hold up to 12 hours, however that is only capable when your flow is light to medium. Remember that everyone’s definition of light/medium/heavy may differ as well.
Many of us do have to empty our cups 3-4 times a day. Sometimes even more. For many of us, it still beats having to wear Super Sized tampons AND a back up pad and still having to change every hour 🙁
The Medium Ruby Cup is a shorter cup to begin with compared to “average” sized large cups. If the cup is comfortable and opens all the way, I don’t think it’s too large for you. Normally if a cup is too large, one of the things that happens is that it won’t open or it will slide out when you bear down.
Chances are, since you are very physically active, you need a firmer cup. Most of the people that I’ve talked to that are very physically active, need something that’s more firm than most. The Yuuki Classic or the MeLuna Sport seems to be two of the “go to” sport cups. There are some others that also might hold up well like the AmyCup “Crystal”, Alicia Cup, Lena Cup “Original”.
I normally like to suggest the Ruby Cup to someone who has a low to medium high cervix, so I’m guessing that your cervix is low to medium? The MeLuna XL Sport Shorty, AmyCup “Crystal” medium or the Lena Cup large “original” might be cups that work better for you.
One more thing, are you sure that it’s actually leaking? Sometimes we can have residual slobber during the heavier days and blood that’s coating our vaginal walls or stuck in our vaginal fornix can be finding it’s way out seeming to be leaking. After you insert your cup, squat, bear down, and wipe the grip rings and/or stem with a wet cloth or wipe to rid some of the excess blood. See if that helps a bit.
Good Luck & Happy Cupping!
