Do menstrual cups move up after they are inserted?
I’m using menstrual cups for the first time. When I’m removing the cup, I see that the tip is not reachable until I squat. I do not insert the cup that high. So, is it normal for the cup to move upwards?
Hello there!
Depending on the length of the cup and the height of your cervix, the cup can/will migrate upwards no matter if you position it low from the start.
If you have a small/short cup and your cervix is medium to high or very high, it’s common for the cup to ride up and sit higher around your cervix. It can also happen if/when you have a bell-shaped cup with a flared rim.
Squatting, as you did, is the best way to reach the stem/cup. I’m an experienced user and still squat because it gives me the easiest access without as much ‘reaching in’. I have a medium to a high cervix and use a variety of shapes and sized cups.
Anyhow, our pelvic floor muscle sits like a hammock about an inch or two up from the vaginal opening. When the muscles contract (even involuntarily like when we cough, sneeze or laugh,) it squeezes and forces anything in the area to a point of least resistance. In this case, the cup will be squeezed upwards because there is no resistance.
So very common with any cup that you use. The key is to find a cup that is still easy enough to reach and still comfortable to wear. If you’re having trouble reaching your current cup, you might want to seek something a little longer or with a longer stem.
Hope this helps answer your question.
