Can’t pee while cup is inserted
Hello,
I have been using a menstrual cup (the diva cup to be exact) for about 10 yrs with no problems. Only recently have I been having issues with being unable to pee while the cup is inserted. It’s like it’s constricting my urinary tract. I have to “push” the pee out but it barely comes out and I end up having to remove the cup to pee. I’ve never had this problem before. Are there any reasons why this may happen and what solutions to try?
Please let me know.
Thank you
Marie
Hello There!
WOW! Ten years! You had a good run of it 🙂
A lot can and will change over ten years. Age, weight, pregnancies (if any), work duties such as heavy lifting or heavy lifting of any kind (children, moving boxes..etc), and many other things can contribute to a change in the pelvic region.
When I hear that someone is experiencing the urge to urinate more often, that they don’t feel like the fully empty their bladder, that they have a slow urine stream, or that they have difficulties with bowel movements, I normally suggest trying a couple of things.
- Turn the cup inside out – only do this if you’re comfortable with removing your cup with the aid of the stem. This will make the cup slightly more narrow (as well as a tad shorter since there will be no stem), and take away some of that pressure. If you’re comfortable with the cup like this, there is no harm in continuing to use it that way. However, if it’s comfortable but you rather find another cup, at least you have an idea of the diameter or firmness that you might look for before running out to buy a new cup.
- Try the smaller size. If you like the shape/length of the Diva and are using the larger size, try the small. It is the same length, but the diameter is a bit more narrow. Again, hopefully lessening the pressure on your urethra.
- Try another brand that is softer.
What I found between my small and large Diva Cup is that the smaller cup feels a bit more firm. I find this to be the same with many other cups. I think it’s because the firmness depends on the overall area.
Anyhow, if you share which size Diva Cup you have, I might be able to suggest some cups of a similar shape and size but softer.
I’m a cup firstimer and I pee myself when inserting it….I can’t control it…otherwise then is perfect, no pain no nothing, is it normal?

Hello!
I don’t know if it’s “normal” but I also don’t think it’s uncommon. Everyone has varying sensitivity when it comes to their urethra. Yours may just want to activate when there’s pressure applied to it in a certain place.
Use the toilet and lean over to push out any excess urine from the urethra before inserting the cup.
Good Luck! <3
