Can’t insert menstrual cup no matter what I try?
Hello,
For the past three months, I have been trying to switch over to using a menstrual cup to no avail. I have not been able to get in it at all, regardless of whatever type of fold that I try. Lately, I have been trying the push down fold (which I heard was best suited for beginners), but I still cannot insert my cup. I have tried inserting my cup in various angles, with lubrication (water, not actual lube yet), in the shower, etc. None of these methods have worked. I know I am capable of inserting one of my fingers into my vagina; and I have even utilized my finger as a guide to insert my cup. Again, it did not go in. Each time I try to poke around and insert it, it only causes me pain (not a lot of pain, but definitely some).
I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong. If my finger can fit inside smoothly, shouldn’t my cup do the same? There is no way a menstrual cup can be too big for me, right? I should also put it out there that I am a virgin and have been a pad user since my first period. I never tried tampons, so I may be quite unfamiliar with my anatomy.
I REALLY want to be able to use a menstrual cup. It has so many benefits and I don’t want to give up on it. 🙁
Any advice is appreciated!
Thank you.
Hi There!
I can hear the frustration in your comment 🙁 I’m sorry that it’s not working out the way that you hoped. I hope that I can shed some light on what might be going on….
First, do you know if you have a low, medium, or high cervix? If you have a low cervix, a long cup might have too much length to be inserted all the way.
If you’re not sure, I would double-check that. It could be the whole cause of your issue.
How to Locate & Measure Your Cervix
Second, our cervix isn’t typically located straight up. Make sure that you’re inserting the cup down and back towards your tailbone. Doing this in a squatting position is the easy way to make sure the cup is aimed where it should be.
How to Insert & Remove a Menstrual Cup w/visuals & Tips!
Some people get the hang of using a cup right away, others don’t. It can take some patience and practice. Water-based lubricants can make a HUGE difference as opposed to plain water. It’s a lot more slippery and helps the cup ease in so much smoother. I find that it’s easier to apply the lube to myself and then wash my hand before touching the cup. If not, everything is TOO slippery 😛
Don’t give up. A lot of people have issues when trying their first cup. Heck, I’ve tried over 200 and still come across cups that give me issues from time to time. Also, there are many successful cup users who never used tampons or never had sexual penetration.
If this cup still gives you issues, you might want to try another cup in a different firmness, shape, size, or length. Try the tips I suggested above before running out to buy another cup, but I’d be happy to help you narrow down a few cups if you want to share which cup you are currently using.
Good Luck & Good Health <3
