Introduction

While the Loop Cup itself is manufactured in Malaysia, Hevea, the creators, is based in Denmark. In addition to the Loop Cup, they offer a variety of baby products that are all FSC* certified. They also meet all required standards in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. The Loop Cup is truly unique in design that stands out from the rest. They are made of 100% all-natural rubber, free of plastic, and are biodegradable. These cups can be purchased from the Hevea online shop for Denmark and Europe, and through Amazon for the USA and UK.

  • *FSC – Materials harvested from forests that are responsibly managed to provide environmental, social, and economic benefits.
  • When searching for this cup, make sure that it bears the Hevea brand name. There is a cheaply made cup that is also called ‘Loop’.

Model 1 – Loop Cup Size 1 | Review

What’s Included?

When purchasing the size 1 Loop Cup, you will receive the smallest of the three sizes that they offer, both in length and diameter. You will also receive a handmade up-cycled cotton and linen storage bag with velcro closure (large enough to fit three cups), and simple, yet complete instructions printed directly on the inside of the box.

Who is it Meant For?

While the company suggests that the size 1 is good for beginners or teens, they also state that this is a recommendation. If you are unsure of which size might be right for you, consider purchasing their promo pack which includes sizes 1 and 2 for a combined lower price.

As a cup user with a medium to high cervix and often a heavy to very heavy flow, I normally just overlook smaller and shorter cups. However, the loop stem was intriguing and I found that it was still easy to reach with my cervical height with the stem intact. I feel that size 1 would be a good option for users with a low cervix who need a soft cup.

Special Features

Capacity – The size 1 Loop Cup holds 18 ml or 0.6 ounces which would be suitable for a user with a light flow or days with excessive discharge or spotting.

Body – The Loop Cup is short with a wide body that tapers to a point at the base. This length would be comfortable with users who have a low cervix.

Stem – The stem is a soft, flexible loop that allows the user easy and stable removal. The stem can be easily trimmed if needed and still has a bead at the base to pinch down on.

I would suggest leaving the rubber bead intact so as not to puncture into the cup itself.

Rim – The rim of the Loop Cup is a thicker band of soft rubber at the opening. However, there is a notch cut-out which the company markets as Anti-suction for safe usage with an IUD.

The issue that I had with the size 1 is that when I bore down with my muscles; coughed, sneezed, laughed, picked up something heavy, or even just stood up from a sitting position, the seal would break and the cup would shift and leak. I’m not sure if it’s because the cup is too soft or too small for my anatomy or if the notch is creating a weak point that collapses.

Secondary Rim – There is no secondary rim or invisible thickening of rubber below the upper rim.

Grip Rings – While the Loop Cup does not have grip rings, there are reinforcement spirals from the base to the rim. While the unique design is supposed to make the cup easy to fold, insert, and remove again, these spirals may also provide the user with some grip.

Silicone Quality – The Loop Cup is made with all-natural rubber sap from the Hevea Tree which is responsibly harvested and is FSC certified. Although natural rubber may darken over time, it is free of preservatives and/or antioxidants.

Firmness – The size 1 Loop Cup is a soft-medium menstrual cup. To clarify, it is on the softer side of medium. Out of the three sizes that the Hevea company offers, the size 1 feels slightly firmer than its larger counterparts.

As a cup user with a medium to a high cervix, I would prefer the largest size (size 3) of the Loop Cup for the length and the capacity. However, the smallest Loop Cup is the firmest of the three sizes which made it the easiest to insert and open while still reachable during removal.

Air Holes – There is one large airhole on the opposite side of the Anti Suction notch that travels straight through. It should be easy to clean by filling the cup with water and forcing it through with compression.

Seams – There is a flash line traveling the length of the cup from rim to base, around the loop stem, and back the other side, as well as the top side of the rim. Although these are visible, the rubber is soft enough that it shouldn’t be felt.

Markings – “Hevea” is branded on the outside of the cup while the lot number and size number indicator are located inside of the cup.

Model 2 – Loop Cup Size 2 | Review

What’s Included?

When purchasing the size 2 Loop Cup, you will receive the medium of three sizes that they offer, both in length and diameter. You will also receive a handmade up-cycled cotton and linen storage bag with velcro closure (large enough to fit three cups), and simple, yet complete instructions printed directly on the inside of the box.

Who is it Meant For?

While the company suggests that the size 2 is good for users who have not given birth or who have given birth by cesarean, they also state that this is a recommendation. If you are unsure of which size might be right for you, consider purchasing their promo pack which includes sizes 1 and 2 for a combined lower price.

The length of the size 2 Loop Cup is probably closer to the average size-small cup that you’re used to seeing. However, the rim diameter may be slightly wider. This cup may be a good size for an individual with a medium to low cervix, but the pointed base and loop stem may be too long for a user with a very low cervix.

Special Features

Capacity – The size 2 Loop Cup holds 25 ml or 0.85 ounces which would be suitable for a user with a light to medium flow or days with excessive discharge or spotting.

Body – The Loop Cup is short with a wide body that tapers to a point at the base. This length would be comfortable with users who have a low to medium cervix.

Stem – The stem is a soft, flexible loop that allows the user easy and stable removal. The stem can be easily trimmed if needed and still has a bead at the base to pinch down on.

I would suggest leaving the rubber bead intact so as not to puncture into the cup itself.

In my experience, wearing it was fairly comfortable even with the loop stem intact. There were times that I could feel the stem drop lower. It was noticeable, but not irritating or uncomfortable.

Rim – The rim of the Loop Cup is a thicker band of soft rubber at the opening. However, there is a notch cut-out which the company markets as Anti Suction for safe usage with an IUD.

I didn’t cough or sneeze while wearing it so I’m not sure if I’ll have the same issue with the seal prematurely breaking as I did with the size 1, but it was fine when I stood from a sitting position.

Firmness – The size 2 Loop Cup is a soft menstrual cup. Out of the three sizes that the Hevea company offers, size 1 feels slightly firmer while size 3 feels slightly softer than the middle size 2 cup.

After my failed attempts at getting the very soft size 3 opened, the size 2 was a lot easier. I found that I needed to push the cup to my vaginal wall and create a void so it had space to open. However, I still had some issues with removing my finger because the cup wanted to slide out or it would stick to my finger and get pulled out. I found that I needed to contract my muscles to keep the cup in place while I repositioned my finger.

Air Holes – There is one medium-sized airhole on the opposite side of the Anti Suction notch that travels straight through.

Model 3 – Loop Cup Size 3 | Review

What’s Included?

When purchasing the size 3 Loop Cup, you will receive the largest of three sizes that they offer, both in length and diameter. You will also receive a handmade up-cycled cotton and linen storage bag with velcro closure (large enough to fit three cups), and simple, yet complete instructions printed directly on the inside of the box.

Who is it Meant For?

While the company suggests that the size 3 is good for users who have given birth vaginally or for those with a heavy flow, they also state that this is a recommendation. If you are unsure of which size might be right for you, consider purchasing their promo pack which includes sizes 1 and 2 for a combined lower price.

I normally prefer a longer cup, but size 3 would be my preferred size with the Loop Cup. It would be the easiest for me to reach with a medium to high cervix and hold the highest capacity of the three sizes that Hevea offers.

Special Features

Capacity – The size 3 Loop Cup holds 30 ml or 1 ounce which would be suitable for a user with a medium to heavy flow. However, since these cups are on the shorter side, if the cervix sits deeply in the cup, the capacity may be slightly less than stated.

Body – The Loop Cup is short with a wide body that tapers to a point at the base. This length would be comfortable with users who have a medium to high cervix.

However, there is a notch cut-out which the company markets as Anti Suction for safe usage with an IUD.

Silicone Quality – The Loop Cup is made with all-natural rubber sap from the Hevea Tree which is responsibly harvested and is FSC certified. Although natural rubber may darken over time, it is free of preservatives and/or antioxidants.

Firmness – The size 3 Loop Cup is a very soft menstrual cup. Out of the three sizes that the Hevea company offers, the size 3 is the softest cup.

I attempted to get this cup inserted and opened several times. I tried the labia fold suggested and mentioned in the user manual, my usual C fold, as well as the punch down and triangle (diamond) fold. No amount of pinching at the base helped this cup expand. I also tried to press the cup to my vaginal wall to create space, but it was so soft that I just couldn’t seem to get it to open. Because of my consistent issues with softness, I opted to use the smaller sizes.

Alternatives to the Loop Cup

While there are a handful of rubber cups on the market, none are as short or round as the Loop Cup. Below are a few cups that may be an option.

Venus Cup – While the Venus Cup is a different shape, the small is narrower than the size 2 & 3 Loop Cup, and firmer than all three sizes. It may be easier to insert and position and holds 29 ml which just about equals the amount that the largest Loop Cup holds. Click here for more details.

MeLuna – If you like the short stature of the size 1 Loop Cup, the medium-sized MeLuna Shorty may be a good place to start. The MeLuna Cup is made of TPE and can be purchased in three different firmness levels; soft, standard, and sport. The MeLuna Shorty line also offers four different sizes if you prefer. Click here for more details.

Saalt – Both the small & large Saalt Cup is slightly longer than the size 2 & 3 Loop Cup but still have a rounded body that tapers to a point at the base. These cups are made of silicone and are available in two firmness levels; regular and sensitive for easy opening and comfort. Click here for more details.

Summary

It might take some time to get used to a menstrual cup made of rubber. Its material characteristics are very different from silicone cups. The Loop Cups are very soft in comparison to the average (silicone) cup on the market, except for maybe the size 1 which is slightly firmer than the other two larger cups. If you’re in doubt about sizing, the Loop Cup is available in a combo pack that includes sizes 1 & 2. If you need a very soft cup and are confident that you can get them to open, then this cup may be a good option. For myself, the Loops Cups in all sizes were too soft for my ease of use and anatomy. I struggled with getting the large cup to open which would be my preferred size for the capacity, but had to settle for the two smaller sizes. I never felt confident that I wouldn’t leak. (Please remember that your experience might be different from mine.)
The anti suction notch in the rim is truly unique, as well as the reinforcing spirals up the body. Will the notch interfere with creating a good seal? It may and it may not. It all comes down to your anatomy as no two people will have the same experience. The loop stem is nice, soft, and stretchy, and should be a comfortable fit while wearing even if left intact.

If you’re interested in this cup, make sure to read up on how to care for it. Cleaning methods may be different than with TPE and silicone.

Additionally, you may notice a fine film of vegetable oil coating the rubber cup. This is to prevent it from drying out during storage and shipping. This should dissipate during proper preparation before its initial use. Any odor that you may smell is of natural rubber. The Loop Cup is plant-based and plastic-free.

*If you have any rubber or latex sensitivities or allergies, a TPE or silicone cup is an alternative option.
