Can Their Underlux Technology Come to Your Rescue?
Dear Kate period panties are available in attractive colors and styles and are designed and manufactured in New York City. Wear them as a backup to your usual sanitary pad/menstrual cup routine. They provide an extra layer of protection that keeps any leaks off your clothes, sheets or furniture. They can be worn alone on light days when you would otherwise wear a panty liner. Dear Kates are different from other period panties because they don’t have a plastic lining, yet they are still leak resistant. They’re comfortable, breathable, and they don’t make a crinkling sound when you move! Many of their period panties come with coordinating bras.
How Do They Work?
Dear Kate period panties work thanks to patent pending Underlux technology. This fabric is moisture-wicking and leak-resistant. It doesn’t contain any plastic like some other brands do, so it’s very breathable, and you don’t making a crinkly sound when you move. The fabric is also anti-microbial to inhibit the growth of bacteria, and it’s sweat proof.
All Dear Kate menstrual panties have three layers of material that provide leak-resistant lining:
- Two wicking and stain-releasing inner layers
- One protective, water repelling outer layer.
The outer body of the Underlux lining is made of 74% nylon and 26% Lycra. The inner gusset is made of soft 100% micro-polyester.
This video will give you a great understanding of how Dear Kates work to give you peace of mind during your period.
You can machine wash and dry all Dear Kates period panties. Wash with cold water and tumble dry on low for best results. Don’t use any fabric softener or dryer sheets because it can prevent the material from absorbing properly.
Dear Kates Styles
Dear Kates come in three styles: Hipster, Brief and Thong. They also have two types of linings: Mini and Full.
About the Styles:
- Hipster: This style has wide sides, a low rise, and full back coverage.
- Brief: The brief style has a high rise that sits just below the belly button, and it has full coverage in the back.
- Thong: The thong has narrow sides, a low rise and minimal back coverage.
About the Linings:
– The Mini Lining covers the crotch of the undies only. It’s perfect for giving some reassurance during everyday wear or as a backup to a menstrual cup or pad. The Mini lining can hold up to a teaspoon of liquid.
– The Full Lining covers the crotch gusset and also extends that coverage up to the waistband in the front and back of the panty. These are great if you are doing yoga, and they’re also great to wear at night. The Full Lining can absorb up to 3 teaspoons of liquid. The Full lining on a thong only holds one teaspoon, though.

Customer Feedback
Reviewers agree that these truly do protect against leaks. Other than that, there are different opinions on the way they fit; some love the fit, others had some complaints. One reviewer said the hipster style cut across the stomach in a way that created an unattractive muffin top, especially during that time of the month when one tends to be bloated. Basically, try to buy Dear Kates in a panty style you’re used to wearing.
About the Company
Dear Kates are made by women for women. The company was started by Julie Sygiel, who has a background in chemical engineering. Ms. Sygiel worked to develop the patent-pending Underlux technology fabric that lines every pair of Dear Kates. Dear Kates started with period underwear and is now branching out into women’s active wear.
The Bottom Line
Dear Kates are beautifully designed panties that most women would be glad to wear even if they didn’t offer extra protection against period leaks. These are the only menstrual underwear I’ve seen that have an option for a matching bra.
A Great Return Policy
Additionally, all Dear Kate orders are eligible for return or refund within 60 days of purchase. On top of that, these panties come with a one-year warranty. If something goes wrong with your pair of Dear Kates, you have a full year to return them for a replacement. That’s excellent customer service if you ask me. The only downside is the price, which is definitely on the higher end of the spectrum. However, the one-year warranty might make them worth the price.

I got two pairs of underwear: I got the Ada high waist brief, and the sophie hi waist brief. The Ada’s leaked thru when I was only spotting. The backside are is already showing signs of wear and fraying after only a few uses.
The Sophie high waist didn’t leak thru. They held up nicely, but the lacy pattern on the sides is also starting to fray, and I am NOT rough with these panties.
Word of caution: When buying expensive menstrual underwear, resist the urge to buy the lacy, more delicate ones. They’re attractive, but less comfortable, and won’t last nearly as long.
Terrible quality, poor customer service!

Hello DearKate! I am currently looking for pads to send to Kenya, Africa to allow young girls to be able to return to school. Without sanitary supplies they have to stay home. According to my contact in Kenya there has been a great massacre and they are seeking donations. They have received some food supplies from Tanzania and toys from Russia but are in need of sanitary items. Women do not use tampons so while looking for sanitary supplies I came across your advertisement and thought to contact you. My friend in Kenya wrote to me last night about sanitary supplies stating ” the government has put tax on such items, the cost effective way is to source them locally. Normally, they cost less than $1 a piece, which can be able to keep a girl in school for most the term. At $2 each, previously,in the organization I started were able to keep girls in schools for up to 4 months. At the moment,we are trying to reach out to those who are still in boarding schools, whose parents have been affected.”
I would like to find a way to ship DearKate to Kenya. Perhaps you have already worked with a group in or near Kenya where we can have them shipped. Please contact me as soon as you can to help me support these young girls. Thank you!
These work perfectly! They are super comfortable, as well leaving you feeling dry and the best part is that they use no plastic film unlike other period panties I’ve tried so feel totally breathable down there.
They are good for working out and comfortable, but very expensive. I would not trust them all day for period leakage. But the sweat was wicked away while I was working out. I didn’t get that swampy feel
Very disappointing. Very granny-like, not thoughtfully made, and not effective. I tried these after Thinx, and while Thinx completely prevented breakthroughs, these gave up the ghost after a very short time. They feel cheap, they roll.
These are really expensive but very pretty and comfortable. I could only afford 1
Expensive and not for periods – I didn’t read the fine print until I got them, for the price of the underwear it should have full protection. If comparing to a regular underwear they are nice, but expensive for just regular underwear.
So far these underwear are the best I’ve tried. They are better then Thinx, which, after wearing dearkate, seem to be of a cheaper fabric. The coverage extends further out front, which is great, because Thinx only extended just at the pubic bone which caused a lot of chafing. Overall, I’d like to give these a full five stars, but had to keep it at four, because the customer service department has of late has not wanted to respond to my emails asking about how to order when the product is out of stock. There is a way to get on the back order list, I’m sure, but they won’t respond back.
I tried Thinx, Hesta, and DearKates. DearKates was BY FAR the BEST!!! Super cute/sexy, comfy, and felt the least like period underwear!
