Best Period Underwear for Women, Girls and Teens!

You may have ventured into the world of cloth pads and menstrual cups, but is there still one crucial element missing from your feminine hygiene repertoire? Introducing: period panties (leak proof panties).
When I found out what these were and how they worked, I had to wonder why on earth I didn’t own a pair of these sooner and why they weren’t more commonplace. I should correct myself, though; these are actually super popular in Asian countries.
However, I grew up in the U.S.A. and had never heard of them until last year. If only things had been different for me; so many sheets, towels and items of clothing could have been saved. But now that these protective panties are in my life, that’s no longer a concern. And to make things even better: They aren’t ugly.

What Makes Period Pants Different from Regular Panties?

Most of us think of period underwear as those pairs of black granny panties that only see the light of day during one week of the month. But the reusable period underwear I’ve reviewed here are so much more than that.
Most of them provide leak-proof protection; some can actually be worn instead of a pad or tampon. And a few brands offer panties with a kangaroo pocket in the front where you can place a heating pad to help with cramps.
All of them offer you more peace of mind against leaks than you’d ever get with a standard pair of panties.

Have you heard of a well-known lingerie retailer’s Million Dollar Bra? I believe that a pair of panties that can give you peace of mind and confidence all throughout the month is a Million Dollar Panty.

I’ve reviewed all of the period panties we could find, and believe me, we looked everywhere so that we could give you valuable insight on any brand you’re considering. Where many period pants contain quite a bit of synthetic material, Adira period proof panties are made with breathable cotton and a leakproof, breathable inner layer that catches leaks. These panties are value-priced, since they’re designed to be paired with traditional period products like pads, tampons, or a menstrual cup. The main feature is the leakproof layer, which acts as a backup for your main form of period protection. This layer prevents stains from reaching the outer layer and damaging your clothing and other items.

Lunapanties are made by Lunapads, the same company that makes well-known and excellent cloth pads. The Lunapanties are a hybrid product that features a cloth pad sewn directly into the gusset of the panty, resulting in a less bulky fit. And with Lunapanties, you don’t have to worry about the pad shifting around. This menstrual underwear comes in a selection of styles to fit a wide variety of needs depending on flow, body type and other unique factors.

THINX, the panties with hidden powers, are period panties designed by a trio of young women from NYC. THINX are made from comfortable, high-quality materials that are also moisture-wicking and anti-microbial. These period underwear feature a waterproof layer, and you can wear them as a backup for your menstrual cup or pad or even on their own. THINX provide up to two-tampons worth of absorbency. Even the Thong style provides a half-tampon’s worth of protection and it has the waterproof layer just like all of the other panties by THINX. These are a tad pricy, but I believe it’s worth it for the quality and comfort.

RubyLove ® Period Undies & Swimwear

RubyLove(formerly known as PantyProp) panties solve a problem period-leakers know all too well: leaks and stains caused by pads slipping out of place, tampons filling up fast, and menstrual cups spilling over. Even pads with wings can bunch up and move to the side when you wear them. RubyLove solves this problem with a special patented angle absorbent crotch, and an extra optional discreet mesh “envelope” built into the crotch that holds your pad securely in place. Not only does this prevent leaks and stains, but it also helps you avoid chafing and irritation that could be caused when a pad rubs against your leg, or the uncomfortable feeling from tampons or cups. These panties will also be appreciated by tampon and menstrual cup wearers because they provide stain protection, thanks to their absorbent material. In addition to their period panties, RubyLove also offers period swimwear, leggings and bodysuits that provide period protection!

Additional Options

This next section of period panty reviews is for menstrual underwear that aren’t made by dedicated brands; the panties are one item of clothing in a range of merchandise provided by the company that makes them. While most of these are high-quality products, these period panties typically don’t have as much information available about them, so I have no choice but to give less detailed reviews; however, the information is still valuable and one of these panties just might be your million-dollar choice.

  1. I am looking for something for my 12YO which is high cut and can replace pads. She is a competitive gymnast and is required to wear a leotard to compete but is too young and inexperienced yet to use tampons. Flesh coloured is a must. Love brand / style suggestions please

Probably too late, but the brand Knix has what you’re looking for – multiple ‘nude’ colours, and multiple cuts (including high waisted). They also have a sub-brand specifically for teens/tweens called Knixteen.

  2. I am a deployed military member. I work 12 to 14 hour days and dont always get free access to bathrooms. I am looking for a complete replacement for tampons for a heavy cycle. I am not looking for a backup for leaks or just to use on lighter days. I have found that I often wear my tampon too long because I cant access a bathroom. I need a complete replacement. Which panty would you suggest?

    • Get a cup with a valve! I’ve been using the Tulip cup and it’s completely changed my life. I have a very heavy flow (right through a superplus tampon and heavy pad in less than 2 hours), but with the valve, I can just empty the cup every time I pee without having to remove it, and have total peace of mind. It’s quicker and easier than changing a tampon – one little squeeze on the valve and you’re done! I take it out and wash it in the morning, then I can relax about the whole thing until 12 hours later when I take it out and wash it again before bed. I only wish I hadn’t spent 20+ years running to the ladies’ with my pockets always full of tampons and pads, always worrying about bleeding through and ruining my clothes/being embarrassed. Honestly, the valve cup is brilliant.

    • Hi Brandy!
Thank you for your service <3<3
Have you ever thought about trying a menstrual cup? They collect the menstrual flow instead of absorbing it like a tampon. While there's always still a chance of TSS, the risk is lessened since it doesn't interfere with your body's natural process.

I know others in the military that use them. If you're able to access a bathroom to empty and rinse it out at approx the 12-hour mark. One person told me that when they were deployed, they squatted in private and used water from their canteen to rinse it off and reinsert. I'm a little worried about infections from a dirty hand doing that, so clean water to wash your hand/s first would be ideal.
If this doesn't sound like something you'd be interested in since it's something you still have to insert, period undies might be a great option. I haven't tried all of the ones listed here, but I have tried a couple of them as well as some that aren't listed.

Something that I would point out is that all of the "real" period undies (I specify "real" because some of them will absorb but not contain) have some type of water-proof layer in them. The water-proof fabric normally isn't very stretchy, so it may not move with your body as well as you would like. If you're squatting, standing, bending over, crouching, crawling, running....you may find that you'll need to keep pulling them up or readjusting them. Again, I have only tried a few and I've found that this happens with some more than others.

The ones with the absorbent and water-proof layer that don't cover the full backside tend to stay put better, but then you lose the capacity and coverage.

Also, if you have a very heavy period, once the absorbent layer/s are full, compression might make them overflow and ooze out the leg or butt areas.

Maybe doubling a cup with a period undie would hold up for the long hours.
There are so many of the period undies coming out. I would suggest picking up a couple of "brands" that are inexpensive to give them a try when you have free time. I would also suggest trying one that's a size larger than you would normally wear to give that extra room/stretch of the water-proof layer.

Good Luck and keep safe <3

      • im not sure cups would last 12 hours with a heavy flow! (depends on cervix) BUT you dont really need access to a bathroom either! THIS is the beauty of cups…. if you have some where to pee, you have some where to take out a cup, empty it and shove it back in. Yes TSS, is always a risk, but much lower than with tampons. There are a few GREAT choices out there for larger cups, which one (largely) depends on where your cervix sits during your period. Then again… if you can wear a tampon for 12 hours and it not leak, your flow may not be as heavy as you think… .i cant go 4 hours, with out leaks.

  3. I have had 2 pairs of Harebrained and they are so cute but not at all absorbant. I had a minor accident that went right through them.

    • I know that you left this comment a long time ago, but I thought the same thing about the Harebrained undies and bought a couple of pairs. “Period Panties” was misleading. They’re only “period themed”. 🙁 They’re cute and fun, but not what I was looking for.

      • Was going to get Harebrained but then read-

Please Note: These are a novelty item and are not made to replace sanitary products.

        • I was wondering if any of the period proof underwear are also suitable for bladder leakage, having both leakage and irregular peri menopausal periods is an issue for me.

        • I was so excited about what was ON the undie that I missed that 🙁 ROFL

  4. How do I order Yoyi Style 7 Embroidery Lace Bow; Style 12 Contolled Brief : and Style 11 Cotton Lace They are not on Amazon

  5. Do you have a review of PadKix? You have a video about them but no review ./ ranking of the product

  6. What’s the feeling on the Harebrained panties and briefs? They’re really funky but I want to know about their absorbency, waterproofing, etc. (harebraineddesign.com)

  7. I love period panties! But I must admit, during my heavy-period days, I still use menstrual cup.
